Dowry system in India From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Essay

This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia’s quality standards. The specific problem is: reference formatting. Please help improve this article if you can. (March 2013) In India, dowry (Hindi: , Daheja in Hindi)[1] is the payment in cash or some kind of gifts given to bridegroom’s family along with the bride. Generally they include cash, jewellery,[2] electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils and other household items that help the newly-wed set up her home. The dowry system is thought to put great financial burden[3] on the bride’s family. It has been one of the reasons for families and women in India resorting to sex selection [4] in favor of sons. [5] This has distorted the sex ratio of India (940 females per thousand males [6])and has given rise to female foeticide. [7] The payment of a dowry has been prohibited under The 1961 Dowry Prohibition Act in Indian civil law and subsequently by Sections 304B and 498a of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Contents [hide] 1 Domestic violence 2 Laws 3 False dowry allegations 4 See also 5 References 6 External links Domestic violence[edit] In 2001 nearly 7,000 dowry deaths[8] were registered in India over inadequate dowry, apart from other mental trauma cases. [9] Bride burning,[10] inducing suicides, physical and mental torture by their husband or in-laws is sometimes found to be done if the bride fails to bring sufficient dowry. [11] There are laws like Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 that help to reduce domestic violence and to protect women’s rights. Laws[edit] See also: Dowry law in India Dowry became prohibited by law in 1961 with the purpose of prohibiting the demanding, giving and taking of dowry. To stop the offences of cruelty by husband or his relatives on the wife, section 498-A was added in Indian Penal Code and section 198-A in the Criminal Procedure Code in the year 1983. False dowry allegations[edit] The dowry law (article 498a) is thought to sometimes have been misused[12] by women to lodge false or exaggerated complaints against husbands and entire extended family accusing them of cruel behavior. As per the data only 2% of the cases registered for dowry demand have led to conviction of the groom or groom’s family. This had raised questions about rampant misuse of dowry laws in India by women to harass husband’s family. According to one survey conducted by reputed Indian news magazine India Today, over 90% of government servants actively seek and get dowry in marriage. It is a common feature for unmarried government servants to seek dowry relevant to the market rates of their post. These rates are sky-high, with an estimate of dowry rates for a bachelor IAS Officer (Indian Administrative Services) being as high as Rs 50 Lac to Rs 5 Crore (up to USD 1 Million). These high rates are one of the primary reasons for corruption as young IAS officers after marriage are forced to take bribes to maintain their new lifestyle and match the financial status of their wealthy in-laws. Discuss the dramatic significance of Feste in Twelfth Night

â€Å"Feste is an observer. He sees through people. Though he's a kind of entertainer, who will only perform for money, what he chooses to sing to people is intentionally relevant. People find the truth very hard to deal with: ‘†¦Peace, you rogue†¦here comes my lady'. This story shows people avoiding the truth at every level; Feste's insight† Ben Kingsley on Feste: Twelfth Night by Trevor Nunn Fool. Clown. Words incessantly linked to someone who isn't taken seriously. This is the case with Feste. For example, ‘fool' in King Lear was constantly being threatened with hangings and beatings, but this was only as he was a ‘witty fool'. Again, with Feste in Twelfth Night, who also is threatened with hangings, due to his absence. Feste doesn't fear this threat, and in fact makes a joke of it; mocking Maria and using a sexual pun at the same time, e.g. ‘many a good hanging prevents a bad marriage' This confidence comes from the fact that it wasn't their job to simply provide amusement, but to also make critical comments and provide advice, as Olivia asks him: ‘What's a drunken man like, fool?' and since he is an ‘allowed fool' he was able to say what he thinks, without fear of punishment: ‘there's no slander in an allowed fool'. Feste and Olivia have the most personal relationship, as Feste knew her father. Olivia uses Feste as a friend, advisor and joker. She says ‘Take the fool away†¦y'are a dry fool', signalling she has no use for him as he cant amuse her, but accepts him when he is humorous, ‘†¦doth he not mend?' She seeks out ‘What's a drunken man like fool?' and once answered, she immediately acts on it: ‘Go thou and seek†¦' Feste is connected only to Olivia's household. The audience are told ‘Lady Olivia's father took much delight in him' and after a long journey, it is her household that he retreats to, and her reference to his ‘fooling growing old' gives the impression of him being around for a long time-a time for which they have been friends. Read this – Puns in the Importance But he also has the ability to distance himself from everyone, such as ‘living by the tabor': unsociable, and the way he speaks; ‘I go†¦' ‘I will', ‘I can yield'- he doesn't need assistance. Moreover, he is constantly mocking people with puns and soliloquy-playing the part of the fool-but his interaction is again limited by the way he is always exiting scenes- 1:v, 3:i and 2:iv. As well as being comic, Feste is probably the most perceptive character in the play. He comments on people in ways other characters over look, whether be their appearance or their ‘mind'. For example, in Act ii: iv, he point blank tells Orsino what he thinks of him, saying his ‘mind is very opal' and ‘the tailor make thy doublet of changeable taffeta' (a silk which changes colour). The joke here is Feste telling Orsino that he is very fickle and has a very changeable mood, so changeable that he should have matching clothes. These mood changes echoes lines, ‘Enough; no more†¦' where Orsino sings to us of his love sickness. Feste goes on to say that he is so changeable that he would sail around the world to justify purposeless busyness and courage. Feste hardly knows Orsino, who in turn scarcely knows Feste, but for Feste to cast this view shows his perceptiveness. This view is so accurate, that it leads Orsino to make Cesario go to Olivia's and tell her that his love is ‘more noble than the world'. Furthermore, he suspiciously notices Viola, and is the only one to start suspecting her, ‘send thee a beard' he says, hinting that he knows of her ‘such disguise'. Feste's perception was reinforced in Trevor Nunn's production of Twelfth Night, where- at the end of the play- Feste gives Viola a necklace, A necklace she abandoned in Act 1:ii -on the seacoast, showing he has always known of Viola's situation and was always playing along, again showing his nature. Feste's Language: The sophisticated way Feste speaks allows him to climb the social ladders of Illyria and be able to talk with Lord Orsino, Sir Toby and Fabian. Which becomes significant when he is able to get himself out of situations or even to make other people react, which may otherwise be tricky and use his language skills to make mockery. Such as the ‘the more fool, Madonna, to mourn for your brothers soul†¦' This scene is the first with Feste, and he has proved to the audience that he is nowhere near being a ‘fool'. So far from it, in fact he has proven someone of a higher social status to be one! This echoes the quote ‘there is no slander in an allowed fool': that- even though Olivia is in mourning for her brother and father- fools would be allowed to make these daring jokes. However, Feste has proved two things here, the first is that he is not ‘dry' and the second that he can provide the humour if is someone does ‘minister occasion to him' or invites him to ‘make that good'. Another key figure of Feste's language is his uses of Latin. The few times he talks and refers in Latin are in the presence Olivia or Orsino, again proving his versatility of talking appropriately with people and it also demonstrating his education to the audience. All his Latin sayings convey messages. For example, the first to Olivia: ‘cucullus non facit monachum', referring to an overriding theme in the play; don't judge by outward appearances, prepares her for his foolery. Another Latin reference is to Orisino in Act 5. ‘Primo, secundo, terito is a good play†¦' although simply begging for a third coin he does it in such a manner, that he deserves it. Feste's songs do hold a dramatic function, which change depending on the scene: they hold meaning and are sung for a reason. Such as when Feste asks, ‘would you have a love song or a song of good life?' The choice reflects the audiences' and the characters' mood at this current moment in the play, or as he said in his final song ‘†¦And we'll strive to please you every day.' Feste's songs seem to have a significant meaning, either used to create dramatic effects or represent/ echo his feelings about a situation in a scene. In Act 2, Feste sings ‘Come away, Come away, death†¦', a melancholy song to Orsino about a lover who dies for love, which echoes Orsino's mood and his situation. The listener can read into this as Orsino being the lover and Olivia being the ‘maid', making sense as the lover is ‘slain'. The words that are used mirror what Orsino has already said, such as ‘My part†¦share it' hold similar meaning to that in ‘If music be the food of love†¦' Orsino then immediately acts on the song and tells Viola/ Cesario to go to Olivia's. This is one example of the role of Feste; do we value what he says or laugh at what he says? Orsino valued what he said (we know this as he sends Viola to go to Olivia and tell her ‘that nature pranks her in attracts my soul not her money'). However, after the song is finished, Feste casts a point blank insight of Orsino, which creates tension, especially with the use of words like ‘corpse', ‘pain' and ‘†¦bones shall be thrown'; words that are associated with death. Causing a melancholy atmosphere in the scene. It's as if the song(s) introduced the sadness, and set the way for Orsino and Viola to discuss love, ‘Our shows†¦will' and ‘pang of heart'. Here's a good example of the dramatic significance of Feste- creating tension. With the next scene starting in comedy, the drama in each scene seems heightened due to the immense contrast. Feste's appearance in the play is held off until act 1:iv. His contribution to the play is revealed through: â€Å"Wit, an't be thy will†¦a foolish wit†. Indicating Feste's presence is not merely comic relief through foolish acts and show that the role of the fool requires much intelligence, or being a ‘wise man', ‘a church man' or someone has all their wits about them: ‘I wear not motley in my brain'. Feste's most significant song comes at the end. He is left alone on stage to sing it- that seems unusual as he's always sung for people. The situation might echo his actual feelings present in the song: loneliness, toleration, and rejection. In Trevor Nunn's version, the song was evidently melancholy which I felt this was a good insight as it draws a logical link to pathetic fallacy: ‘the rain it raineth every day' and ‘wind'. The sense of journey through the song is reinforced with links of Viola and Sebastian's journey- which ends in ‘lovers meeting' The meaning of this epilogue suggests that every person goes through life, with its vicissitudes, but he/she must remember that ‘it raineth every day' or there is always unpredictability. Feste's contribution to the themes of love is essential to the understanding of the play's messages. The clown's most profound comments often take the form of song: ‘O mistress mine, where are you roaming?†¦Youth's a stuff will not endure.' It's in this song where we could possibly see Feste uncovering Viola and dictating the whole play. ‘Trip no further, pretty sweeting;' where the ‘pretty sweeting' may be Viola, and the ‘wise man's son' is Feste. If this is so, then it suggests that Viola-Orsino may end up as ‘lovers'. This song is performed due to the requests of Sir Toby for a â€Å"love-song†, which plays on the events of Twelfth Night itself by echoing the cheerfulness of this play and how the uncertainty of ‘what's to come' shouldn't be a negative prospect as ‘in delay there lies no plenty'. Feste foresees events that will occur later in the play, when he speaks of journeys ending â€Å"in lovers meeting,† he hints at the resolution in which characters are married. At the end of the play, Shakespeare provides an epilogue, like other plays, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and All's Well That Ends Well. However, unlike these, Feste sings it. The song is about Feste growing up, about being tolerating in childhood, rejected in adult hood, unsuccessful in marriage and drunk in old age†¦but nothing really matters, the actors will always try and please- talking directly to the audience. A slight re-iteration of the song: ‘What is love†¦youth's a stuff will not endure', telling the audience that we should enjoy the present because the futures is as unpredictable as the weather: it could be good e.g. Viola-Orsino and Sebastian-Olivia, or it could be terrible e.g. Malvolio. Feste's ability to gain gender specific favour is distinct when encouraging Sir Toby to indulge in ridiculing Malvolio: ‘O no, no, no, no, you dare not' (where an Elizabethan audience would of received ‘no, no, no, no' and ‘yes, yes') -no matter their social status. The reiterating it: ‘four negatives makes your two affirmatives'. His sexual puns, such as ‘he that is well hung†¦' would have gone down well with the men too. Feste can use word play, or puns, at specific points in the play to make the audience laugh or even add to the tension so far. A good example is in Feste's first scene: ‘he that is well hanged in this world needs to fear no colours'. The first interpretation of this pun is the word ‘colours' which can mean enemy or war. So, logically, someone who is already dead can't fear. However, an Elizabethan audience could have heard it as ‘collars' (hangmen's nooses) so they don't fear them. The Elizabethans enjoyed such punning jokes, and with Maria threatening Feste with death, and then Feste making the whole audience laugh, the dramatic significance of Feste is apparent. The role of Feste: Feste's intuition is comparable only to the perception of Viola. As both characters are involved in both houses (Orsino's and Olivia's) they rival each other in their knowledge and putting their wits against each other. Namely Act 3:i, where, they both delight in using word play, ‘a sentence is but a cheveril glove to a good wit-‘ and later Viola saying ‘I understand you sir', showing him that she is just as clever. Viola seems to be the only character that recognises Feste's true intelligence: â€Å"This fellow is wise enough to play the fool†¦quite taint their wit†. Exhibiting Viola's awareness of Feste's ability to read people in order to say the right thing at the right time. Through this keen observation by Viola, she is acknowledging that may seen through her own disguise. Although Feste never openly claims to know of Viola's deceptive dress, it is indicated that he might be on to her: â€Å"Now Jove†¦send thee a beard†. Feste's ability to control the audience becomes apparent wherever Shakespeare wanted to portray thoughts or morals, as he would make Feste tell the audience puns or songs. In Act 1:v, he says: â€Å"many a good hanging prevents a bad marriage† communicates as if you are well ‘hung' then you need not love, and if we look back, to Act 1, the Latin quote refers directly to how Shakespeare felt- therefore reinforcing Shakespeare's values. Therefore, it is possible that Feste was the voice of Shakespeare, and if Shakespeare wanted to make the audience happy, for dramatic effect or other, then he might use Feste to sing a song, When Feste says lines 359-354 in Act 5:i, he quotes the things that Malvolio has said, and a feeling of ‘what goes around comes around' is created. The putting down of Malvolio would of been particularly enjoyed by the audience, because of his puritan no-fun nature, and therefore have a very comical affect for them. The plot in Twelfth Night is convoluted. So fools might of been used in this play; to underline and reinforce important parts of the plot for the audience, and make their songs and folly draw parallels to the play. In Twelfth Night, Feste sings to Malvolio ‘†¦She loves another'. Feste has seen through Malvolio and knows of his affection for Olivia, and crudely tells him there is no likelihood for him, moreover, he already must know of Olivia's affections for Viola. The fool in ‘King Lear' informs King Lear of the goings behind his back, where he is oblivious to them, but even though he is informing the king, the audience may of also received the message. Conclusion: The ‘Twelfth Night' was known as the â€Å"Feast of Fools†, which is very similar to â€Å"Feste the Fool†. Making it extremely significant, as the Feast of Fools was a time where a â€Å"Lord of Ridicule† was appointed. An Elizabethan audience would of received this (intentional) similarity and therefore see Feste as this Lord of Ridicule. If Feste were this lord, then he would become the master of the household, for this short holiday period, and organise dances, folly, pranks and deceptions, in order to entertain the rest of the household. If which case, it would explain Feste's songs, drunkenness and of course dressing up as Sir Topas- all roles similar to that of a fool. Ironically, Feste is the only person not to be seen as the fool. Olivia is the fool, as she has fallen in love with a woman, Orisino is seen the fool, because Viola has tricked him into thinking she is a man. Sir Andrew comes across as the fool because of his foolish remarks, like taking the word ‘ass' literally and believing ‘Pigrogromitus'. Malvolio is the fool for dressing up in ‘yellow†¦cross-gartered' stockings In conclusion, what makes the audience happy is the same thing as that which makes them sad, and Feste accomplishes this flawlessly. With his irony, puns, soliloquy, his songs and criticisms- he directs the play in a moving omniscient manner.

Responsible Government In The Canadian Regime Essay

Responsible Government In The Canadian Regime - Essay Example Soon, people began to agitate and rebel seeking "reform" of the constitutional system. As a result, Lord Durham was sent to Canada to investigate the cause of the rebellions and to figure out a solution. Lord Durham stressed that "the complete assimilation of French Canadians" (Malcomson and Myers 2005) was necessary and proposed the Act of Union. Further, he stated that a responsible government was needed to handle the situation and the British Government eventually acknowledged the idea. Canada's constitution has therefore been under the principle of responsible government, based on the fusion of power, which is distinct from a separation of powers. This fusion of power is the most important and fundamental factor in the responsible government system that helps the Canadian government remarkably efficient. It also increase voters' accountability, and imposes strong influence over the confidence in the House of Commons. The responsible government which depends on the fusion of power, allows the cabinet not only to acts as an executive but also to take a role in legislative action. There are no "standstills of the sort[and] once the cabinet backed by a parliamentary majoritythere is nothing to stand in its way." (Malcomson and Myers 2005) Because the same group is responsible for legislating, practicing and enforcing the law, they can take decisions without transferring the proposal from one branch to another for permission. Moreover, in a responsible government, the "power is married to responsibility". (Kam, Sept 19, 2006) Under separation of powers, it is hard to blame a particular branch or a person for unsatisfactory political events. However, in a responsible government, the power is fused into one system, and therefore, the responsibility for positive or negative events lies on one entity alone. This also influences the voters' evaluation of their elected servants. The fusion of power increases the accountability to the voters much more than separation of powers. Under the principles of responsible government, the prime minister and the cabinet's legitimacy solely depend on the confidence of the House of Commons which generates unique characteristics for the government. The prime minister and the cabinet are not directly elected by the people. Because of this, their democratic legitimacy depends on the confidence of the House of Commons. Consequently, if the members of the party do no support each other and cooperate in order to endorse the ministry, they will soon lose the confidence of the House and their right to rule would be taken away. For this reason, the party discipline in Canada is pretty strong. Furthermore, it prompts MPs to vote in support of their party instead of their constituents' desires. The dependence on the confidence of the House of Commons also influences the date of the election in Canada. Under the principle of separation of powers, each branch and the president are elected separately. Once they are elected, they each have their own mandate. However, in Canada, "the timing of parliamentary elections is normally decided by the prime minister". They "canlose that confidence at anytime,[so] it is essential to be able to hold elections at any time." (Malcomson and Myers 2005) The responsible government system originated from the British, but soon percolated into the Canadian government, creating distinctive features in the

Miss Representation - Essay Example One of the most useful tools for the mainstream (digital/electronic media) is misrepresentation. I believe that media is now an expert in forming ideologies; resolutions and keeping in check people’s lifestyles. I agree with the film’s message that there is a certain agenda the way media portrays women. They are usually portrayed as the victims, short tempered and there is no way people can put women on screen without sexually objectifying them. In my opinion the way media portrays women has a strong effect on the way women in real life see themselves. Teenagers spend hours in front of television, passively absorbing information through images. It would be hard to argue that TV doesn’t affect lifestyles and ideologies. I would agree with the documentary that people are paying more attention to women’s appearances rather than their content (their knowledge and skills). It seems as if youth, beauty and sexuality are the only degrees left for women to qualify. On the other hand, I also don’t agree with the extreme opposite where women should seek a revengeful behavior because they have been portrayed as victims. A revengeful feministic approach towards matriarchy is the last thing I want. It would be doing the same with the male gender what media is doing with the female gender. This society, its resources, job opportunities should be available to both genders based only and ONLY on their merit not on their

According to Landes, the Mdewakantonwan was grouped into seven to ten villages with about 50 to 400 people per village (220). They had strong corporate features economically and politically independent and owned plenty of land. This book helps people understand the socio-cultural organization of the Santee; thus giving a better understanding of their cultural perspective. This book written by Charles Eastman and Ernest Blumenschein in 1971, traces the life of Eastman growing up as a native Santee Sioux. He mainly talks of his life in Canada, where he had gone to exile after separating with his father and siblings during the Dakota war, in 1862. Eastman claims that during his childhood in Santee, children were trained through several ways such as narration of stories and myths by adults, games and sports, and spiritual and moral training among others (54). The learning that Eastman expresses from his childhood is not much different from the learning that takes place in the society today. This is a nonfictional book written by Roy Meyer in 1968. According to Meyer, the Santee is an American Indian group, which consists of four divisions of the eastern Dakota (199). They include the Sisseton, Mdewakanton, Wahpeton and Wahpekute. The Santee spoke the languages of the Siouan of eastern Dakota that is strongly related to the Lakota language spoken by the Teton, and Nakota, which is spoken by Yanktonai and Yankton. The Yanktonai, Yankton, and the Teton are the other three divisions of the Dakota. Meyer argues that the traditions of the Santee shows that they originated from the northeast, probably near the â€Å"Lake of the Woods†, but the expanding Ojibwa community forced them out of their homeland to the South and West (200). They rose against the Whites in 1892 under the little cow, but lost the war, as well as their remaining Land in

Business strategy - Essay Example Porter’s value chain provides an important tool for a tool for developing and sustaining competitive advantage for a company. It underlines the need for creating and retailing value for the organisation. Value, in general, can be defined in respect of customers, employees and owners or other stakeholders. Value addition is considered an important ingredient in dealing with the competitions, as it provides the organisation with a strategic tool. An individual’s beliefs or conceptions about what is desirable, good or bad – forms the value system (Kotler, 1974). Innovation, excellence and value go hand in hand in today’s competitive environment. Customers and the target market are crucial stakeholders for any organisation. Configuring value means defining, creating, branding and pricing the offer. The company can acquire competitive advantage on its rivals on account of marketing efforts, brand building, value creation, innovation, operational efficiencies etc. But more important is to sustain the advantage. The value configuration describes how value is created in a company for its customers, how the most important business processes function to create value for customers and the way a particular company/ organization conducts its business. Some of the value addition gradually takes the form of threshold competencies for the organisation, and the consumer starts expecting these value additions from the company. The process of value creation encompasses managing quality in the entire chain of processes leading to the production of final product or service. Quality in essence is delivering superior value to the customer. The value phenomenon is complicated and multifaceted. The term â€Å"value† can be defined in different ways according to the adopted perspective of th e analysis: it is possible to determine a â€Å"customer value†, a â€Å"firm value†, a â€Å"stakeholder value† (Mele and Colurci, 2006). Monkey Story (Company Norms) The story is a good analogy of how corporate norms are justified or rationalized. However, eventually, it presumes that, just like monkeys, employees manifest a blind adherence to company norms without questioning the underlying rationale for the behavior. I beg to disagree. People are rational beings. Eventually, new comers question why they are being told to do things the way they should do. Normally, organizations orient new employees by making them acquaint themselves with company policies and the organization’s code of discipline so that their work behavior is justified by the rules and regulations explicitly stated in the company policies and code of discipline. These are critical to ensure order, discipline and appropriate observance of work ethics and moral conduct expected of employees in a pr ofessional endeavor. Thomas Peters / Thomas Potters was one of the founders of the Sierre Leone and he along with others recruited African settlers whom they used to colonize Sierra Leone.4 He was born in Nigeria and was to be taken by slave traders who sold him to a Frenchman in North America and later sold to an Englishman, and he fled during the American Revolutionary War. When he was free he decided to petition the British administration where he was able to convince the Royal administration to let him settle in Freetown, Sierra Leone and he

Religion and International Relations Research Paper

Religion and International Relations - Research Paper Example Although the concept of religion is as old as mankind, it is interesting to note that policymakers and legislators have vastly ignored the roles of religion in the governance of a nation and even international relations. The schism between the East and West has increased by twofold because of this very reason that they fail to incorporate religion in their dialogue, leaving no space for people from these two different worlds to interact (Fox & Sandler 2010, p. 2). The substance of this prose will not only examine the importance of religion in international relation as discussed in light of scholarly theories but it will also discuss the techniques through which they can use to include religion and use it to create a more harmonious society. Although religion has been used multiple times in political context, but despite its frequent usage it is impossible to put down this phenomenon in to a proper definition. Religion is often seen as a set of ideas or notions that are vastly negated by scientific research and are perceived to be irrational (Philpot et.al 2009). Religion is widely believed to be irrational, which underlines the negative sentiments against this institution. However, sadly not everyone especially in the Eastern sphere agrees with that notion which turns out to be the main source of conflict. This is because Religion is responsible for shaping worldviews; as mentioned earlier, since religion constitutes culture it is also a part of an individual’s identity. Religion is also used to legitimize basic human rights and political processes. Moreover, most religions have transformed into huge organizations, like the Catholic Church there is an added pressure to appease and include religions (Fox & Sandler 2010, p.2). Even historically there is a strong tie between correlation between nation and religion is that it is what helped the people relate to one another. It was a binding force as it brought people together and helped them demarcate right from wrong. Religious views led to establishments on various superstitions and myths, and with the rising popularity of science, it just sparked more debates and people became wary of religion, but with terrorist attacks the sentiments became more hostile towards the idea of religion. However the conflict is triggered because most of the scholarly work done on the matter is vastly done from Western-centric perspective and which is why this blatant ethnocentricism in religious views has further deepened the conflict. However, as the society becomes more and more culturally diverse and even aware, there is an added pressure on authorities to take religion into account as per the constitutional clause that entitles every individual to freedom of speech, expression and practices. The most unfortunate fact is that because of the controversial nature of the topic, religion is more or less treated as a tabooed subject. The modern rejection according to Fox & Sandler (2010, p. 10) comes fro m the stigmas attached with religion that is extremist, radical and backward. There is a need for more open dialogue on the subject and an increase in literature from all three sides; which is the pro-religion side, the anti-religion and one from a neutral perspective. Policymaking is a crucial affair as individuals need to take into account diverse needs of the people and religion becomes even more of essence as not just 9/11 but there are plenty of conflict existing in present day that are triggered by or has it s base in religion, which will be discussed in later parts of the prose. The case

Macroeconomic Aims of a Government Essay Example for Free

Macroeconomic Aims of a Government Essay The government and policymakers of a country intervenes in the economy in order to achieve economic growth, price stability, and low rate of unemployment. First and foremost, economic growth can be defined as an increase in the countrys output over a period of time. This means there is an increment in her productive capacity hence a rise in national income. A high economic growth is desirable as it represents an improvement in the material standard of living of the society. A rising real income per head brings about more and better quality goods and services, which are available for consumptions of individuals. However, an improvement in the case of consumer welfare due to economic growth is highly doubtful if the growth is accompanied by undesirable side effects such as negative externalities, leisure time forgone or even a dilution in the societys tradition custom. Through redistribution of income, economic growth can eliminate poverty. A higher output allows households to enjoy more goods and services thus generating higher income and through the multiplier effect increases national income by folds. Besides that, the governments tax revenue will rise too, leading to more benefits for the poor such as education and training. This may even help curb the problem of poverty. The authority also highly regards sustaining a stable price level as a primary objective of economic policy. This is because inflation, defined as a sustained and inordinate increase in the general price level, could have harmful effects both socially and economically. A rising price level creates uncertainties and complicates decision-making, thus may hamper economic growth. Fluctuations in the level of prices makes information conveyed by prices harder to interpret. Consumer, firms, and the government may face a tough time in allocating funds or resources for the future in an inflationary environment. Furthermore, as the society strives to maintain its real value of income by keeping up with rising price level and competing with other social classes, the countrys social fabric could be severely strained. The mere existence of inflation means that the real value of money is falling. Thus, it will be necessary for the government to intervene in  the economy in order to prevent hyperinflation from happening. The countries that experienced the most extreme examples of trotting inflation are Argentine, Brazil and Russia. The slow growth brought about eventually crippled virtually the entire economic system. Every government places a low rate of unemployment at the top of its priority. The percentage of total labor force unemployed makes up the rate of unemployment. Economic costs of unemployment can be devastating, as it could mean a lower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to loss of potential income to factors of production, whilst social costs such as increased poverty, personal hardships to individuals, decay of unused skills, raise in crime rates and family disputes prove the worthiness of the goal of achieving high employment. On the other hand, stability of a countrys exchange rate in the foreign exchange market (FOREX) is vital, as fluctuations of the exchange rate create adverse effects to the economy. There are mainly two cases which are prevalent in most economies. Firstly, an appreciation of the exchange rate may cause exports to become relatively dearer, and lead to loss of competitiveness (comparative advantage) to a country. Secondly, a depreciation of the exchange rate brings about serious domestic inflation, encourages exodus of capital and thus puts the country under stress of lack of investment and unemployment. On the external aspect, the government aims to achieve equilibrium in the balance of payment, especially the current account. A deficit in the current account drains the savings and reserve of a country significantly, leading to a chain effect of higher national debt and burden to future generations. In view of the above objectives, the government is needed to regulate and rectify situations. Therefore, the conclusion can be arrived that government intervention is fundamental to every economies in the world.

History and Culture Essay Example for Free

History and Culture Essay Too long the country has been deprived of its national pride and independence. By 1911-1912, the foreigners were everywhere. The best way was to use them as sponsors for our changes, and let them call me â€Å"a dictator [corrupt and †¦ brutal] surrounding himself as soon as he could with some of the most despicable Chinese agents of the old regime; favoured [†¦] by foreign financiers [in the lust for] money and power and the means of extravagance and debauchery. † This year, the things are really disastrous. Chinas foreign debt reaches 900 million taels. The dynasty has gone bankrupt undertaking expensive reforms of the governmental administration, military and educational system. The new regime followed the West in the enchantment with democratic elements of constitution, representative assemblies, separation of governmental powers, and political parties. On my side, I was more interested to pacify gentry and to centralize state power having been dissolved after foreign intrusions and imperialistic affairs. For me as President, therefore, the prior task is to obtain the loan from the Four Group Powers in order to keep a strong and obedient military resource to establish the right type of government. My fame played to the benefit of the task. I do remember how Dr. Morrison, the then political adviser to the Chinese Government, was trading with Mr. Crisp, the head of the firm of C. B. Crisp Co, about the loan to pay for our administration needs this year, in 1912. We needed it badly in order not to depend so greatly on the Four Power Group, not to speak about Russia and Japan with their greed in regard to concessions. Then, the last persuasion for the â€Å"hard nut† Crisp to lend us ? 10,000,000 was delivered by Morrison in the words about my dictatorial position being the â€Å"benefit† of China. I am afraid, though, that we will have to owe the Four Group Allies ? 500,000,000, at the rate of ? 100,000,000 a year, not to forget about Japan and Russia trying to cut the fattest pieces of our cake in terms of territory, commerce and politics. Now I shall speak about my plans for the future. I really want to establish a â€Å"no-squeeze policy. † I believe that the modern Chinese state and nation should be centralised. The first step to do is to preserve the capital, thus, the centre of administrative authority, in Peking for the whole period of my office of President. Second, as I have never been a republican, I think about establishing a sort of a military dictatorship. I was often called the â€Å"strong man,† â€Å"a reputed reactionary,† and â€Å"arbitrary, tyrannical and self-indulgent† by my contemporaries, and, no doubt, I will be labelled like this by later researchers. My political opponents from the Kuomintang went even further referencing to me as nothing more than â€Å"[t]he fat bewhiskered general†. But even they can not deny that it was I who could build a strong army and placating fighting camps. That is why, in my opinion, there is no need to let those wordy democrats to spend time, effort and money on elections and the qualifications of voters. Let me stay â€Å"the strong dispenser of law and order† identifying the course of state policy by myself. Consequently, I plan to get rid of those tries to establish â€Å"popular sovereignty in the form of political parties and representative assemblies. † I watch them reorganising Sun Yat-sens Revolutionary Alliance into the Guomindang, or Nationalist Party, to dominate National Assembly after its election in December, 1912. I know that the trifle show with democratic elections for National/provincial/county assemblies could jeopardise the institute of centralised power I am planning to introduce. Later on, I will force the National Assembly to elect me as president for a long term, better for five years. Then, I will kick the Guomindang from the parliament because they are likely to assume too much political weight. The best solution will be also to dissolve all the assemblies that resemble a boiling pot, so â€Å"risky and messy† they are. Finally, I will do my best to consolidate all the state power in the hands of one person, and that person would be I. The best form to centralise power is monarchy, how ever discredited it has become. How about the British or Japanese constitutional model of the Emperor co-existing with the parliament? Lately, the title of â€Å"Grand Constitutional Emperor† has occurred to my mind as the best definition of the political system I want to achieve. Reanimating Confucianism as a state religion, there would be a chance to resurrect also the ideology of monarchism and to get back to traditional values, seeing also to the better economic and education opportunities to provide the nation with wealth and development. Free Native Son Essays: Society or Personal Responsibility :: Native Son Essays

Native Son: Society or Personal Responsibility  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚        Ã¢â‚¬ËœDoes society create people or do people create society.’ Does one’s surroundings create a person or does a society create that person’s surroundings, ultimately creating a fate for that person. There is a very interesting portrayal of this idea in a book called Native Son by Richard Wright. It gives one an inside look on how a young African-American man grows up in the 1930’s, how crime affects him and how his surroundings and society have created his life and fate.    Bigger Thomas, the young man who’s life is portrayed in this striking book, did not necessarily have homicide in his fate. However, throughout all the negative experiences Bigger has experienced, it is not surprising to one how he fell into his situation. Bigger grew up in poverty, without a father, with discrimination leaking from cracks in the walls of his family’s one room rat infested apartment. He grew up on the south side, the black area of town, where everyone lived in apartments such as his. This of course was not by choice but by white entrapment, and the oppression and slavery of African-American people and those morals and traditions which are still upheld in this country today. This is not to say that it is completely society’s fault; it is everyone’s fault through neglecting the obvious. However, even through poverty the south side may have been able to come together to create a basis, a stable place for their children to grow up in. I am not blaming them, though. Racism was obviously rampant and it may have been impossible to come together when everyone was forced to put themselves first. With the theories of racism and hate engrained into society, how easy could it be to break free of discrimination and make something of yourself? â€Å"Down here in Dixie we keep Negroes firmly in their places† (P.324). When so much effort is put into keeping people separate and hating someone, for whatever reason, it gives a person a reason not to care what happens to them in terms of their lives. If nobody else cares what you do, then why should you? I think this is what Bigger felt when he was growing up. I think he also saw white people as such a high power that he was unable to do anything about what he felt was wrong.

Comparing the Unique Characters of 1984, Animal Farm and Burmese Days :: compare and contrast essay examples

The Unique Characters of 1984 and Animal Farm and Burmese Days      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   George Orwell, an alias of Eric Arthur Blair, is know for the books 1984 and Animal Farm. In both of these, as well as in most of his others, he seems to delight in using vivid and wholly believable characters, easily believable because of their obvious and tragic faults. Another similarity seems to be the consistent use of irony, a stylistic choice which plays big in Burmese Days and in several other works. Also, Blair enjoyed placing his characters in situations and settings that were out-of-the- ordinary, constantly reversing or switching roles. It is a mark of talent that he is able to use all of these so effectively, making us believe the unbelievable and accept the incredible at the same time that he makes us emphasize with the characters and see similarities between them and ourselves, long after they were written.    Blair's penchant for extremely well-done characters, entirely believable and understandable, is shown by both his major works as well as his lesser known first fiction piece, Burmese Days. In 1984, the main focus of the story is Winston Smith, an Normal Party member living in the year 1984 except for his dislike of all that the Party stands for and distrust of its message. Of course, these qualities, questioning of authority and subtle disloyalty to unfair persecutors, are considered good by the public today. In the book however, these abilities were destroyed, smothered, and obliterated through careful means, and anyone having them was branded insane, dangerous, and antisocial. Thus, the author creates an immediate bond between us and the suffering main character by showing a little person vs. Big Brother (Blair being the first person to use the word). "The Thought Police would get him just the same. He had committed, even if he had never set pen to paper, the essential crime that c ontained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime could not be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they ware bound to get you" (Orwell 166).    This passage, particularly the final sentence, slowly builds up the reader's bond with Winston. He is being persecuted for being innocent, for thinking, and this persecution makes him seem all the more likable. The final, and perhaps most interesting part of Winston's development in 1984 is near the end of the novel.

This Boy’s Life Essay -- Essays Papers

This Boy’s Life In both the film and the book This Boy’s Life Tobias Wolff is surrounded by bad role models and terrible father figures. Wolff and his mother are constantly looking for the complete family life and find themselves in a series of bad situations on their quest. In the book Toby’s relationship with his mother Rosemary is illustrated in a clear and deeper manner but the movie just didn’t seem to focus on it enough. This paper will evaluate the portrayal of Toby’s relationship with his mother and the men in their lives as told in the memoir and the film. The relationship that Toby has with his mother is a very strong bond. That is evident in the film and the book. But what Toby lacks in both versions of this story is a good father figure, which his mother seems to be always on a journey to find for him. Early in the book Toby has several misadventures with bad influences, whether they are friends or father-like figures. Roy seems to be one of the first influences to really catch the reader’s eye. He follows Toby and his mother all the way to Utah from Florida mostly just to be with Rosemary. Roy uses Toby to get to Rosemary in many ways, for example when he buys Toby the rifle or when he takes him to spy on Rosemary at work and follow her home. Roy makes this seem like it is a game to Toby and befriends him this way. This portrayal of Roy is very well done in the film, too. To me this is a very important part of the story in general, because after you read the book and see the film, almost all the men who come into T oby’s life treat him in some way like Roy treats him. Anything it took to get to his mother seems to be the theme of the story. This behavior would have a very traumatizing effect on any young child at that time in their life, but with the influence Toby’s mother has on him he is always trying to find a way out of bad situations. Another example to this theme would be the chapter in the book when Toby and his mother go to Alkai Point to watch the mock naval battle and they run into the two men. They had left Roy not long before that and moved to Seattle so they could escape him again. This must have worked, finally, because Roy does not try to find them for the rest of the story. This chapter is not used in the film and probably could have been omitted from the book, but it des... ...e he belongs. He sets out to be a wise guy, masking the uncertainty he feels. His stepfather, Dwight, masking his own demons and insecurities, also sets out on a mission to drive Toby down to his level. It’s to Toby’s credit that he doesn’t want to stay down and that’s enough of an edge. Instinctively using the creative license of his absent father, he finds a tenuous way out--enough of a break to set him on a better path.† (Salavarria) Of course the film could not add all these things that I feel make it weaker than the book. It would have become a short television series or something like that if all these things were added. The story had a very long list of characters and became very involved at some points, but I think this made the book interesting to more than one audience. Some parts of Toby’s life were very comical and fun, some parts left you on the edge of your seat, making you wander why he did some of the more consequential things that he did. In closing I feel that the book did a much better job than the film of illustrating the life of Wolff. The book made Toby’s relationship with his mother and the men that were in their life much more dramatic.

Smart Ways Airline

Welcome to â€Å"Smart Ways Airline†. This is a new airline company that just opened and is very excited about taking people to their flight destinations around the world with the best and smartest service available. This paper will attempt to explain information about development, products, and services for â€Å"Smart Ways Airline†. So, please make sure all seatbelts are fastened and enjoy the flight. â€Å"Smart Ways Airline† provides â€Å"Plane Smart† service to each and every customer who boards the plane. As the matter of fact, â€Å"Plane Smart† is the slogan for the airline company. This slogan was chosen because â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† takes a lot of time to make intelligent decisions about the philosophy, mission, and vision about the company. â€Å"Fly Smart† is another slogan that the company will use to promote its high quality airline service to all of its customers. When a customer chooses to fly with â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† they will be making a very smart decision. Funding for â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† will be collected through concession fees, facility leases at the airport, and landing fees. â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† will also receive funding from tax dollars on aviation fuel. The fuel tax will be added into the cost of the airline passenger ticket. All project and development planning will be funded by the government through a program known as the AIP (Airport Improvement program) and FAA grants. The FAA grants will be used to make improvements and increase airline security and protection. Airline tickets for â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† will average about 10% lower than the national ticket average. â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† will meet or beat any competitor's rates and prices. Above all, if a customer is not satisfied with his/her flight for any reason, â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† will refund part or all of his/her money (Depending on the reason for dissatisfaction). â€Å"Smart Way Airlines† wants its customers to be happy while flying and wants them to be returning customers who recommend others. An airline's fleet is one of its most important assets and as such its composition and deployment directly influence the airline's profitability. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† offers a comprehensive fleet planning and aircraft evaluation service that has guided the strategic decision-making of a variety of operators worldwide. Computer software has been developed in-house to facilitate the analysis of multiple equipment and route combinations using a particular airline's ground rules. This is indispensable for determining the optimum aircraft mix for a carrier's current and future network. A comprehensive database is maintained on the technical, operational and economic characteristics of all commercial aircraft and business jets currently in service or under development. The company is therefore well equipped to undertake comparative economic studies of new or used aircraft types to any degree of detail required. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† fleet planning services are supported by rigorous understanding of commercial aircraft technology aided by excellent working relationships with airframe and engine manufacturers. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will fly Boeing 747-8 International planes. These planes will seat 450 passengers divided into three class sections, in two aisles. These planes were chosen because they will provide a quieter flight, produce lower emissions, and achieve an excellent fuel economy. The Boeing 747-8 will have a lower seat-mile cost than other Boeing 747s and has 25% more cargo space, which provide for better luggage and cargo accommodation. The Boeing 747-8 is actually 13% lighter per seat than the A380 and will consume around 15% less fuel per passenger than a 500 seat plane. The wingspan on the Boeing 747-8 International plane is approximately 224 feet (68.5 meters). It is approximately 243 feet (74.2 meters) long and 63 feet (19.4 meters) high. Its thrust is 66,500 pounds and cruise speed is mach .085. The maximum takeoff weight of the Boeing 747-8 International is 960,000 pounds â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will also have Boeing 747-8 Freighter planes. These planes will have the same economic benefit as the Boeing 747-8 International planes. This plane will have more cargo space allowing four additional main deck pallets and three additional lower deck pallets. This Freighter plane actually weights about 95 tons less than the average cargo plane, thus providing for better fuel mileage. The dimensions of the Boeing 747-8 Freighter Plane are the same as the Boeing 747-8 International plane, except it is 250 feet (76.3 meters) in length. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines will begin by leasing these aircrafts. However, â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† plans to purchase 2-4 planes per year. Plans for additional types of aircraft may be created in the future as the company and customer base grows. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will be known for its unique service. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will always stand behind their customers to assure that they receive the best service and the most comfortable, affordable flight available. All planes will offer several amenities such as current movies in all three classes, personalized radios at each seat with a wide variety of music choices offered by Yahoo, pull down laptop computers and cell phone access attached to the backs of each seat, a menu and full bar service in all three classes, magazine and other reading materials, and handheld video games available for flight rental. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will go the extra mile to make sure that each customer has the most unique, comfortable, accommodating, and affordable flight available or the customer's money will be refunded in part or in full. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will meet or beat any competitor's rates and prices. Flights are available to any type of customer from the business person, to the vacationing family and the oversized person. There is a seat for everyone, regardless of the reason for travel or any body shape. The seats are comfortable, reclining seats that have small pillows and blankets located underneath each seat. Seats are also accommodating for infant and child car seats. For all customers who buy tickets at least 24 hours in advance, the option of receiving flight information via email, text message or phone call is also available. There is no need to call and wait to hear if the plane is delayed. If something is delayed or cancelled, a â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† representative will call the passenger and let them know of the situation. At the end of the flight, all passengers are asked to complete customer satisfaction survey. This survey help â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† to provide the things that the customers are looking for. They take the time to listen to each and every customer, rather negative or positive. Customer satisfaction is top priority to â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines†. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will have its main offices located within Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland, Ohio. Within Cleveland Hopkins Airport, â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will have three main gates. One gate will be for international flights, another gate will be for domestic flights and the third gate will be for freight planes only. At each gate, customers will have a comfortable waiting area with televisions, telephones, restrooms, internet access portals, and a restaurant or small store where snacks and other things can be purchased. A â€Å"Smart Ways Airline† representative will walk around and talk to the customers in a friendly manner. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† wants the customers to feel at home when they are traveling, so the â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† experience begins at the gate. Scheduling of flights will begin at least a year in advanced. The sooner the customer books the flight, the better discount they will be qualified to receive. Flights will leave Cleveland Hopkins Airport on a daily basis and flights will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will always have a representative at the gate to help prepare the customer for the flight, to answer questions, and provide quality customer service. Flights information and ticket purchase options are also available online. The company will be organized into five major operational areas: All six operational areas will work together as a team to provide quality customer service. The Management team will be lead by the CEO and president of the company. Then, there will be managers and supervisors for each of the remaining five areas. The flight operations crew will consist of the pilots and stewards. This will be any crew member who flies on the plane with the customers. The Maintenance crew will consist of a team of workers who will clean, repair and maintain the planes in flying and operable conditions. The Financial team will handle the operational cost of the company. They will also be responsible for accounts receivable and accounts payable, finances, payroll, and other spending accounts. The Marketing department will be in charge of advertising, promoting and selling the services to potential customers. Finally, the customer service team will be the representative who are based at each gate and assist the customers before and after their flight. The customer service team will be responsible for all areas of customer services relating to the flights. FAR regulations will be adhered to on all flights. Any FAR regulation that deals with the safe operation, passenger and flight security, passenger and crew conduct, procedure, and policy will apply to all flights with â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines†. Marketing at â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will be the key to their success. The marketing department will continuously strive to make sure that customers know of the value, the options, and the type of customer service they can receive if they choose to fly with â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines†. Television, magazine, newspaper, and mailing advertisements will be offered. A website will also be available and flight information will be available through airline advertising websites such as Travelocity.com and orbit.com. When a customer purchases a ticket, they will be automatically enrolled in the frequent flyer program. This program will be a promotion to encourage returning travelers. The points that are accumulated on the frequent flyer program can be applied to future discounted prices, hotel and restaurant discounts, and theme park or movie discounts. For the traveler who is not a frequent traveler, the points can be used onboard the flight to purchase amenities such as food, beverage, book or game rentals, internet service or cell phone usage charges. Another marketing strategy that will be utilized by â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† is the Neighborhood and Four Walls Approach to Marketing. This technique requires little or no company money to fund. At â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† the customer service is so good, that they word of mouth actually sales the product by itself. When one customer is satisfied with their flight, they will tell their friends and family members about the flight, who will in turn, come and fly with â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines†. The quality customer service and uniqueness of the flights will sell itself through the excellent word of mouth that will be spread around by so many satisfied customers. As with beginning any company, there will be some barriers. Four main barriers that â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† may encounter are 1.) Lack of qualified employees, 2.) Weather conditions in Cleveland, 3.) Not enough planes to accommodate large crowds of people and 4.) Lack of funding. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will only hire the most qualified employees. Each potential employee will go through a strict interview and screening process. During this process, the applicant will be required to take a series of test. Applicants with a strong working history with another airline will be given priority. Once hired, the applicant will then have to pass a series of classes as part of their training. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will know and understand how valuable each and every employee is to the success of the company and will only hire the best, and most qualified people to do the job. Weather conditions in Cleveland vary. It is possible to see many different changes in temperatures and conditions within one day. During the winter months, flights may be delayed or cancelled due to conditions. In this case, â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will handle the weather conditions accordingly and strive to provide quality services. With the best customer service and the most affordable guaranteed airfare available, many people will want to fly with â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines†. Each plane only holds 450 people, so tickets will sale fast. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† will strive to accommodate all passengers. Additional flights and planes will be added as needed. Finally, lack of funding can be an issue for any airline. â€Å"Smart Ways Airlines† has smart ways to hand funding barriers. One way is by lowering ticket prices and encouraging more people to fly. More people flying at lower rates can actually increase sales than less people flying at higher rates. â€Å"The plane is now landing. Smart Ways Airlines hopes that everyone has enjoyed the flight that they have learned a little about how Smart Ways Airlines offers the best, most comfortable, most affordable, and the most unique flying experience available today. Thank you for flying the smart way with Smart Ways Airlines.†
